Discoveryschool is a website by the creators of The Discovery Channel that proves to be a wonderful technology resource for both teachers and students. This user-friendly website can be incorporated in the classroom, shared with fellow teachers, explored by students at home, and used to create lessons. This site provides a plethora of lesson plans, worksheet and puzzle generators, fun facts, and homework and science fair help.

It can sometimes be tiring to try to “reinvent the wheel” when creating lesson plans and worksheets. I may be teaching science next year and will definitely need these resources! Looking up fun facts and sharing them with the kids would be wonderful. I would love to share and explain this website to my team and the new teachers next year. To introduce this website to the students, I will use my scan converter. Then, I may give pairs or individual students a website challenge to complete and then let them explore. At some point, I will let the pairs or individual students use the computers in the classroom to have fun learning on this website. When it comes time for the science fair in the spring, I can send home information telling the families of this website (I’ll reiterate this in my classroom). I can also tell the students that they may use Puzzlemaker to create puzzles for the group projects. Above all, I want to stress to my students that this website is a wonderful resource for them with their homework, their projects, and to be enjoyed.

Discoveryschool has many resources, but I will only go through the most beneficial aspects of the website that does not require signing-up or buying a service.

PowerPoint is a program designed to create slide shows. This program is included with Microsoft Office, which most schools have. PowerPoint is a wonderful tool to teach students how to take notes, write daily math messages or assignments on, and to create student-generated slide shows. PowerPoint has been an asset in my classroom.

Being able to teach both my students and colleagues how to spice up their PowerPoint presentations (by backgrounds, slide transitions, and clip art) is a wonderful task. It is good for students to learn this for future individual or group presentations (projects, book reports, etc.) throughout their lives. It is also beneficial for other teachers to learn PowerPoint more in-depth so that they can keep the attention of the class when using it and feel more confident. My goal is to help both my students and my colleagues become more comfortable and expand their knowledgeable with the program.

Before I teach a lesson about sprucing up a slide show, I first make sure that the students/colleagues were familiar with the program. When teaching these ideas to my students, I would have my computer connected to my TV by the scan converter, and model using whole-group instruction. Then, the students could practice and explore in groups. Giving simple tasks to reinforce what we learned would be ideal. When teaching a colleague, I would sit down with him/her and show him/her the step-by-step process of adding to PowerPoint presentations. Printing out these directions for him/her would be a nice gesture as well.

When thinking about teaching elementary school lessons, Microsoft Excel may not readily come to one’s mind. Microsoft Excel comes with the Microsoft Office program, which school computers most likely have. Excel is a wonderful tool for charting data and organizing information. Teaching lessons about how to use Excel will be very beneficial for students to know.

Due to the limited number of computers in an average elementary school classroom, grouping the students into groups of 3 to 4 would be beneficial. If the classroom is set up so that one of the computers is hooked up by a “scan converter” to the TV; modeling how to use Microsoft Excel would be wonderful, so that the students can see how to use the program step by step. The teacher has many options of how to present Excel; the teacher can model first by using whole group instruction, and then let the students get into their groups to practice, or the students can be at the computer already and go through the steps with the teacher as she/he models the lesson.

In the fifth grade, interpreting and gathering data is heavily taught in math in accordance with the statistical landmarks (i.e. mean, median, mode, range, etc.). The students love gathering data about themselves, so I focus a couple of math lessons on measuring the span of their hands, the length across their backs from their left hands to their right hands, and the distance of their stride. During this coming year, I am looking forward to having the students take this information and chart it by using Microsoft Excel.

When teaching the students of this age, simplicity will be the key.

How does one excel when modeling Excel?

1. With your mouse, go to the Start menu on your computer. Dependent upon how your classroom computer is set up, Excel could be in a different place than on your home computer. It may be under Accessories, Microsoft Office, Favorites, or it might even show up on your desktop screen. When you locate the icon, double click on it. (Make sure you know where this is prior to the beginning of the lesson).

2. The page that comes up is what you will directly use to insert the data. The letters at the top of the screen can be used for the name of the category (i.e. Right Hand Great Span, Left Hand Great Span, etc.) To insert the name, click on the box below A, for instance. You can immediately begin typing your title.

a. If your titles are too big for the title boxes, don’t worry, you can fix that. Move your mouse to the vertical line that separates the “A” and “B”. When you see a line with an arrow going through it, click on it and drag it to be the desired size. Repeat for any other headings.

3. Once you have inserted the needed titles, you can now enter the data. Under heading A, with your mouse, click on the box which lines up with the number 2. Enter your first number (10” for instance). Going down the column, enter the rest of your data that is in that category. Follow these directions for the rest of your categories. You may wish to have the students center the data, buy clicking on the “center” button on the tool bar.

4. At the bottom of the sheet, after all data is entered, in Column A, you could include the statistical landmarks.

a. When finding the data, the students could have calculated the landmarks, so all they have to do is insert it.

b. For instance, on line 24 in Column A, type the word “Mean = 12 in.”. On line 25 in Column A, type the word “Mode = 13 in.”, and so on. Repeat steps for each category.

5. Now that the data is entered, you may want to define the borders of your data sheet. Take the mouse and click on box A2 and drag to highlight all of the boxes that you have inserted the data in.

       a. Once it is highlighted, go to the toolbar and find the icon that looks like a window or a“four square game”. This is called the “border” icon; click on it. You will be given a variety of options to choose from. Choose the border style that will best suite your needs. I suggest that you select the “four square” picture again to include all borders.

6. Now it is time to give the spreadsheet a title.

            a. In the tool bar, go to View, then click on Header and Footer.

Click “ok”.

7. Last but not least, go to File, then Print Preview to see your masterpiece. Make any needed changes, then select the print button on the toolbar to print the final copy.

*The students will be very proud of themselves when they have mastered Excel. You should be proud too for teaching them this important program successfully. Now the students have their very own class copy of the results from their gathering of their data, which you can further explore, and compare measurements. After the students feel comfortable with Excel, you can always expand on their knowledge by tackling more complex ideas this program has to offer.

*Above all, have fun helping students excel with Excel!

Hi everyone! My name is Kelli. I teach in Boone County. This year completes my 3rd year of teaching, in which I have taught 5th grade every year. The fifth grade is such a fun age to teach! I am coming up on my second anniversary with my husband Doug. We love to read, go to movies (especially at the drive-in), spend time with our friends and family, and enjoy life. I started working on my masters last summer and am proud to report that after this summer, I will be half way through!! I love to use PowerPoint in my lessons – it helps the kids take notes, and keep their attention by the motion clip art and the pictures I include. The students also use Accelerated Reader tests, Scantron testing, STAR math and reading, and they use the computer for researching different topics. I only had 3 computers in the classroom this year, but I am supposed to get more next year. I am taking this course because I like to be able to use technology in both my personal life and my teaching life, but I can be timid about jumping into new programs that I don’t have instructions on. I want to become more self-sufficient in learning technology and being able to incorporate new ideas into my classroom. I use technology every day (i.e. email, digital camera, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, searching the internet, etc.), but I want to learn so much more. I hope that throughout this course, I can take back a plethora of ideas that I can use in my classroom to better help my students and to make me more comfortable with various technology. I look forward to this summer!
